The Come Out Roll in Craps

The come out roll is the first roll of the dice in a betting round, and it's one of the most exciting moments at the craps table.

What is the Come Out Roll?

The come out roll begins a new round of play. Before this roll, players place their Pass Line or Don't Pass Line bets. The shooter then rolls the dice to determine the outcome.

Possible Outcomes

Natural Win (7 or 11)

If the shooter rolls a 7 or 11 on the come out roll, Pass Line bets win immediately, and Don't Pass bets lose. A new come out roll follows.

Craps (2, 3, or 12)

Rolling a 2, 3, or 12 is called "craps." Pass Line bets lose immediately, while Don't Pass bets win (except 12, which is a push in most casinos).

Point Established (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10)

Any other number becomes the "point." The dealer marks this number with a puck, and the shooter continues rolling to try to hit the point before rolling a 7.

Strategy Tips

  • The Pass Line bet has a house edge of only 1.41%, making it one of the best bets in the casino.
  • Once a point is established, you can take odds behind your Pass Line bet for even better odds.
  • The Don't Pass bet is the opposite strategy, betting against the shooter, with a slightly lower house edge of 1.36%.
